Labor Reform
The Progressive Movement
Many different types of reform went on in the late 19th century and the early 20th. It was widely known as a time of reform. There was immigration, women's suffrage movements, labor movements, and many other great changes. Learn about theses and the reformers who led them.
LABOR REFORM AT LAST
Finally, in 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt passed the Safe Food and Drug Act- a law that prohibited the use of unsafe chemicals in food and drugs. It also required the factories they were produced in to be clean and safe. Slowly but surely, factories began to improve and so did their products. These laws unofficially marked the battle of labor won at last.
Settlement House: A community center for Urban citizens where lower class residents and immigrants could seek help and education.
The Hull House contributed to society greatly, taking in many immigrants, and helping them find well paying jobs, homes, and schooling. It was a Settlement House, one of which that was contributing to the Socialist Movement going on in the early 1900's.
The Hull House was founded in Chicago, Illinois by reformers Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr in 1889.The Community center had day care with a playground and a gym. There was also a school where cooking and sewing was taught, as well as a kindergarten for residents. The Hull House offered less fortunate people a chance to practice talents such as music, art and drama. It also gave low-income children an adequate education.
LABOR IN THE EARLY 1900's
Beginning in the late 1800's, factories began to grow bigger and better with the use of new inventions. So, they acquired more workers- sometimes thousands at a time. These workers were poorly paid and labored in bad working conditions. Many employees were hurt or killed by dangerous machines. These factories were also very unsafe and unsanitary- and many food producing factories used rotten or raw foods to make their products.
THE PROGRESSIVES
Many reformers called Progressives worked hard to make factories safer and cleaner. the Progressives tried to pass laws to make food, medicine, and factories safer for the people. They led protests and wrote speeches about the unpleasantness and unjustice of factory work. Sadly, many early protests were unsucessful and many reformers were injured or killed, all to protect the workers.
THE KNIGHTS OF LABOR & The AFL
The knights of labor was the first official labor organization in the U.S.. They led the way through labor reform, protesting and forming a labor union of workers who wanted to improve working confitions.
Many workers thought that the knights of labor was not doing enough to protect their rights, so these workers formed The American Federation of Labor. the AFL was made up of many trade unions. A trade union is an organization of workers who do the same job. The AFL protested for higher salary, safer factories, and shorter work hours. The AFL, having so many trade unions, was able to have every worker in one area of work on strike. this made the strikes effective, and the AFL continued to protest.

The Progressive movement was a group of reforms made to heal many social mistakes America made in the burst of industrialization of the late 19th century. The gap between "rich" and "poor", and "Have" and, "Not have" was growing larger and larger. As many immigrants poured in, cities grew overcrowded, and slums began to grow, increasing the poverty rate. Many people were homeless, and many immigrants did not have work, homes, or schooling, and didn't speak engilsh.
The progressive movement was successful mostly to the credit of reformers called muckrakers, and progressives like Jane Addams. Muckrakers wrote about (and took pictures of) the horrors of poverty, living in slums, and many other unfortunate things. Settlement houses were opened to bridge the gap between low and high class- middle class workers interacted with their lower-class neighbors. In settlement houses, immigrants also were able to get jobs and homes to become more successful.
